It’s harvest time in my organic garden and I’m thrilled to offer this handy gardening tip for you. For a bountiful bean harvest, plant seeds directly in warm soil, as beans tend to germinate poorly in cold temperatures. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers as bean roots combine with soil bacteria to make their own nitrogen. Add mulch to help retain moisture, and keep plants consistently watered while they are flowering to encourage good pod development. For a longer harvest, sow a new crop of bush beans every two weeks. Pick pods while they are still young and tender to encourage continued production. Also, consider growing beans that climb, or pole beans, which generally produce higher yields across a season.
