Pluck up the courage to step into a loving and compassionate lifestyle with us. Here’s a gardening tip for you. Downy mildew is a group of water molds that can affect many garden favorites, including basil, cucumbers, squashes, melons and spinach. When buying seedlings, inspect them carefully, as the disease can sometimes already be present. Look for yellow patches between the leaf veins and a greyish purple mold on the underside of leaves. Downy mildew can spread quickly and become difficult to control, so remove affected leaves as soon as you spot them and dispose of severely infected plants. Avoid overcrowding, control weeds and provide good airflow around plants, while keeping foliage as dry as possible. Water at the base of your plants in the morning rather than in the evening, and if growing in a greenhouse, open doors and vents when conditions allow, to reduce humidity and prolonged leaf wetness. Choosing mold resistant varieties where available and practicing crop rotation for vegetables can also help prevent the disease from returning.
